On the cover: Columnar Basalt provides a dramatic
frame for Toketee Falls, where the upper North Umpqua River cascades 90
feet. "Toketee" means "pretty" in Chinook jargon and early Spring is a
splendid time to view the falls, accessible by a 0.4 mile trail through
blooming trillium and rhododendron. This 1997 photo is courtesy of Jim
Dopkus of Springfield, Oregon.
