Trung D. Tu

Occupation: Attorney, McEwen Gisvold LLP

Occupational Background: Staff Attorney, U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit; Certified Law Student, Intern Deputy D.A., Multnomah County District Attorney's Office; Public Honors Fellow to Oregon Supreme Court Justice Robert Durham; Law Clerk, Oregon Department of Justice

Educational Background: Lewis & Clark Law School, J.D.; University of Notre Dame, B.A.

Prior Governmental Experience: See above

Trung has the experience necessary to be an effective and fair judge. He tried over 60 cases at the D.A.'s Office. At the Court of Appeals, he advised judges on decisions for over 150 cases. At McEwen Gisvold, he handles a broad range of civil cases. Trung has a strong background in both criminal and civil law.

Trung and his family escaped from Vietnam shortly after the war as boat people. Trung spoke no English when he came to Portland and lived in public assisted housing. As a child, Trung helped his family by picking strawberries alongside migrant workers and dug worms to sell as bait. Trung worked hard to overcome adversity and become a respected lawyer. Trung brings common sense to being a judge, and would become one of only two Asian-American judges in Oregon.

Trung is dedicated to his family, and gives back to his community: He raises his eleven year-old brother as a single parent, coaches the Jefferson High School Mock Trial Team, and provides pro bono legal services to the poor.
