Occupation: Attorney, small business owner.

Occupational Background: Deputy District Attorney; Legal Aid of Oregon; Infantryman, U.S. Army Rapid Deployment Force.

Educational Background: University of Oregon School of Law; University of California at Berkeley, A.B., magna cum laude.

Prior Governmental Experience: No elected offices.

OUR PROBLEM: Lincoln City has Oregon’s highest crime rate for small cities; Newport is second. Excluding those two cities, Lincoln County has Oregon’s highest crime rate among rural counties.

BRENDAN’S COMMITMENT

FISCAL RESPONSIBILITY: Reduce District Attorney’s office budget by 15 percent. County dollars are scarce; government has to reduce waste and allocate resources effectively. In two different law firms, Brendan cut costs without disrupting service. “I will manage the D.A.’s budget in order to prosecute crime and keep the same level of service without requiring taxpayers to pay more every single year.”
PRIORITIZE LINCOLN COUNTY’S #1 CRIME PROBLEM: Appoint a Deputy District Attorney to prosecute drug cases. Too often, drug dealers are allowed plea bargains that reduce their time in jail. “I will not allow this to happen in my administration. Also, I will donate 15 percent of my salary to the Lincoln Interagency Narcotics Team to help them combat local drug manufacturing.”
VICTIMS FIRST: Appoint a Victims’ Department director who will manage the branch of the D.A.’s office that eases the burden of crime upon victims. “I will restore the Victims’ Department to year 2000 staff level.”

COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT: Awarded by Oregon State Bar two consecutive years for providing highest number of hours of free legal services to the poor; Domestic Violence Council; Newport Chamber of Commerce; American Legion; Veterans of Foreign Wars.

“Our current approach to prosecuting crime is not effective. We need a different response and new ideas to make our community safer. The office of District Attorney should be taking the lead in reducing crime. If I’m unable to halt the increasing crime rate, I will not seek re-election.”
