OCCUPATIONAL BACKGROUND: Teacher, 26 years at Blue Mountain Community College, 4 years high school; small business owner; co-owner of a family farm.
EDUCATIONAL BACKGROUND: MS, Sociology/ US History, Montana State University; BS.,
Montana State University.
PRIOR GOVERNMENTAL EXPERIENCE: Oregon State Representative 1997-. Eastern Oregon Regional Airport Commissioner 1988-1996. Pendleton Transportation Plan Advisory Member, 1995-1996. Delegate to White House Conference on Families, 1980. Veteran, USAF 1950-1954.
PERSONAL: Raised on a ranch; Married to Evelyn; 4 grown children all living in Pendleton area; sons--Robert and Chuck, daughters--Linda Gehling and Carol Aldrich; 10 grandchildren; Avid sportsman. I came to this community in 1967 when BMCC was a fledgling community college and assisted in its growth to one of the finest schools in the nation.
EXPERIENCED . . . AS YOUR REPRESENTATIVE:
As a member of the Education Committee great schools for our children will remain my top priority. I will work to:
*Place more emphasis on the basics.
*Reduce overcrowded classrooms.
*Allow teachers to remove disruptive students from classrooms.
EFFECTIVE . . . AS YOUR REPRESENTATIVE:
Violent juvenile crime that plagues our society must be addressed. I will:
*Work to develop state wide programs for early identification of high risk juveniles.
*Support holding all young people accountable for their delinquent actions.
*Sponsor legislation taking a strong position against all firearms in schools.
FOR EASTERN OREGON . . . AS YOUR REPRESENTATIVE:
Preserving our agricultural heritage is fundamental to District 57. I will:
*Promote common sense answers to questions about breaching Columbia River dams.
*Insist that sound science be used to manage our resources.
*Advocate that all stakeholders be involved in seeking solutions.
I am not concerned with partisan politics when there is a problem to be solved. In District #57 there is a strong tradition of working together to achieve solutions. I will carry this tradition to Salem. I need your vote.
