OCCUPATION: State Representative; Attorney

OCCUPATIONAL BACKGROUND: Registered Nurse; Nurse Instructor, Peace Corps Volunteer, Mariana Islands

EDUCATIONAL BACKGROUND: Nursing School, White Cross Hospital; B.A., Political Science & Economics, Ball State University; J.D., UCLA

PRIOR GOVERNMENTAL EXPERIENCE: State Representative, 1994-Present; Member, Jackson County Budget Committee, 1991-1994; Member, Jackson County AIDS Taskforce, 1988-1991; Member, Ashland Community Hospital Board of Directors, 1990-1996.

Public Education

As the mother of two daughters and a graduate of two public universities, education is a priority for me. As your legislator, I supported quality education and stable funding for K-12, community colleges, and higher education. I also helped establish a Rogue Community College campus in Jackson County and co-sponsored changing the status of Southern Oregon State College to a university.

Fiscal Responsibility

As a former Jackson County Budget Committee member, I know how to balance budgets. I have been a strong voice in the Legislature for prioritizing spending and considering fiscal choices in their entirety. I have fought to make sure Southern Oregon gets its share of state funds.

Safe and Strong Communities

I co-sponsored the "Best Interest of the Child" bill, limiting the time an abused child can spend in the foster care system before a decision is made on permanent placement. I also co-sponsored legislation enabling patterns of abuse to be entered as evidence in domestic abuse cases, making it easier to prosecute batterers.

Health Care

As a registered nurse, I have always been a strong advocate for accessible health care. During the 1997 Legislative Session, I sponsored bills to increase patients' rights and their access to information about health plans. In 1995, I worked to help patients with incurable pain obtain the treatment they needed.

Southern Oregonians may come to me with an idea or concern and expect attention and honesty in return. Please feel free to contact me with any thoughts or questions you may have: 488-8214.
