As a small business owner, involved community leader, and experienced legislator, Tom Hartung knows what it means to set priorities and make tough decisions.
Tom Hartung's top priority is improving the quality of education for all our children. As Chair of the Senate Education Committee, he fought for higher academic standards, increased local control, stable funding, safer schools, and innovative reforms in K-12 education. In addition, he worked to increase accessibility for Oregonians to our higher education system and to increase its efficiency.
Oregonians have sent a clear message that they want government to use their tax dollars more effectively. Tom Hartung believes government should be more accountable and less wasteful. He worked to reduce property taxes, voted to eliminate inefficient government programs, and voted to increase accountability in our schools.
Tom Hartung has consistently voted to preserve our quality of life. He was instrumental in establishing Oregon's historic land use planning laws to effectively manage our growth. He supports improving our transportation system to reduce traffic congestion. He has worked to keep our community safe by voting to stiffen penalties on criminals, to give law enforcement officials more tools to effectively do their jobs, and to increase victims' rights.
