DO YOU BELIEVE THAT CORPORATIONS SHOULD HAVE MORE RIGHTS THAN YOU OR I?

If you live anywhere in America, corporations possess far more rights than we do! Once created, corporations can live forever. Can you? Corporate CEOs and shareholders are legally protected from lawsuits by limited liability laws. Are you? And corporations are granted special tax breaks (i.e., abatements, taxpayer guaranteed loans and tax-free bonds). Are you?

Yet, despite the fact these "artificial persons" are given more rights than you and me, they don't share the same responsibilities that you and I share. If a corporation causes environmental degradation that jeopardizes the health of our communities, why is it that most, if not all, of the clean-up is paid for with our tax dollars?

Why is it that after receiving tax abatements and taxpayer-funded infrastructure improvements a company can just decide to up and move? In such cases, the community has made a strong investment in the success of the corporation, but our investment doesn't equate with having any voice in company decisions. It's because most corporations aren't democratically run or accountable to the public.

It is only because our elected leaders cannot offer any reasonable justification for granting corporations "human" rights that I decided to run for office. I'm not a politician; I'm an average citizen like you who has grown tired of having the interests of corporations placed before the interests of our communities.

If elected, my number one priority will be to submit legislation that will overhaul Oregon's corporate chartering system. To obtain a charter--a license to operate--in Oregon, corporations will be required to meet stringent labor, environmental and consumer standards and to become democratic partners with communities, not overlords.

WHEN YOU CAST YOUR VOTE THINK DEMOCRACY VOTE SOCIALIST
