Why I'm Running
People in Eugene sincerely want a livable future, but fight heavily about getting there. I retired as Mayor in 2005 with a reputation for fostering dialogue to get things done. My successor has been exclusionary, with failures in key policy areas.
Potholes: A city must prioritize general spending to address its most important needs. Eugene's pothole backlog has DOUBLED in the last three years.
Crime: Protecting our neighborhoods, schools and downtown MUST become a top spending priority. Eugene's police officers deserve adequate funding and respect, certainly NOT what they've received the last three years.
Economic, Environmental Balance: Eugene is blessed with natural gifts—and burdened with Oregon's most stagnant economy. Moderate, properly managed growth is healthy. Finding buildable land to attract suitable businesses that generate tax revenues and family wage jobs, is the only way to create an affordable place to live and raise families without imperiling our natural blessings.
